A woman was rescued from a house fire in Morden yesterday that investigators believe was caused by candles.
On Sunday evening (November 14), fire crews from Mitcham, Wimbledon, Sutton and New Malden were called to the blaze at 10.32pm, which broke out at a home on The Drive in Morden.
A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said that the ground floor of a semi-detached house there was on fire.
Prior to their arrival, a woman was rescued by a man from the inferno. Both were treated on scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews.
In the aftermath of the fire, which was brought under control by fire crews by 11.33pm, LFB warned against unsafe candle use after suggesting candles were the cause of the fire.
"Candles are one of the most common causes of fires in the home and you should be careful when using them," an LFB spokesperson said.
"It’s really important that you never leave them unattended and keep them away from anything that could catch fire such as curtains, furniture or clothes.
"We recommend swapping traditional candles for LED flameless ones as they are much safer, but if you do use real candles, follow our simple safety tips."
