London has cemented its position as the cultural centre of the UK, as all of the top ten visitor attractions for 2015 are based within the capital.

And, of the top 20 tourist attractions, only five do not fall within Greater London.

This is despite many attractions experiencing a drop in visitor numbers since 2014.

The list, compiled by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA), ranks the British Museum as the most popular tourist attraction in the country, with over 6.8 million visitors last year.

It is followed by The National Gallery, Natural History Museum and Southbank Centre, all of which had over five million visitors, while the Tate Modern brings in fifth place with 4.7 million.

However, six of the top ten have experienced a drop in visitor numbers from last year, including a 19 per cent decline for Tate Modern, an 18 per cent drop at the Southbank Centre and a reduction of almost ten per cent for the Tower of London.

Of the top 20 visitor attractions in the UK, only five can be found outside the capital, including Chester Zoo, Edinburgh Castle and the National Museum of Scotland.
